When I was asked by the Chief Editor of the Int. J. Dev. Biol. to consider editing a Special Issue about “the chick”, I was first hesitant, because I had already edited such an issue for another journal in 2004 (Mech. Dev. volume 121), when the sequence of the chick genome was first released (Stern, 2004, 2005). But at the same time I was surprised that this journal, well known for its Special Issues of which many have become important historical and literary land-marks to the developmental biology literature, had not yet produced a volume on what is probably the oldest developmental model system. Despite this, it is often .....

The amphioxus, or lancelet, is a fish-like marine chordate which is considered to be an archetypal vertebrate form. Although specialized tunicates are closer relatives to chordates, amphioxus represents the best living outgroup proxy for the study of the evolution and development of vertebrates. It spends most of its life burrowed in the ocean floor, exposing only the front part of its body. It collects its food by filtering the surrounding water through its mouth, which is protected by conspicuous oral cirri stiffened by a cartilaginous skeleton. The illustrated amphioxus belongs to the species Branchiostoma floridae, the Florida .....

While the history of developmental biology in Israel is relatively short, its impact is far-reaching, so we wanted to present a concise perspective on the Israeli developmental biology community, past-present-future. This community has undergone a wonderful, nearly exponential growth over the last three decades. How exactly did this happen? There are approximately fifty research groups that focus on developmental biology questions in Israel today that are members of the Israel Society of Developmental Biology. The community has representative groups in a plethora of model systems, such as Nematostella, C. elegans, Drosophila, sea .....
