Aztec legend says that the god Xólotl escaped from his death by transforming himself into a little water monster with the uncanny ability to regenerate any part of its body. This iconic animal, Ambystoma mexicanum (“Ajolote” in Spanish), has not escaped a fatal fate, as it is critically endangered nowadays in the wild, keeping its secrets of eternal youth written in its large genome.
